Research on historical Icelandic documents is hampered by an almost complete lack of NLP tools capable of analyzing them. However, modern tools show promising results when applied to normalized versions of historical texts. We will discuss the problems faced by researchers working with historical Icelandic documents, demonstrate a new tool which automates the task of normalizing and analyzing historical text and examine several benefits of this approach.
